Community and Self-Advocacy Awards at Community Partners’ Conference

 BIDDEFORD, Maine (May 3, 2011) – Every other year, the Community Partners, Inc. (CPI)  Lead Team self-advocacy group organizes a Conference to recognize people with developmental disabilities. This year, 120 people attended the April event in the Community Conference Room at People's Choice Credit Union in Saco.

 The theme of the conference, “Partners in Appreciation,” celebrated family and friends, and how relationships bring value to lives. The Distinguished Community Membership Award was presented to seven people: Debb Freedman (Maine Organization of Storytelling Enthusiasts), Helen Trefethen, (Meals on Wheels), Kristi Savage (Department of Health and Human Services), Linda Rodalski (mother of CPI consumer), Nancy Beaulieu (Cooperative Extension of York County), Sandy Ford (Sunday School Teacher), and Pam Smith (UNE Preceptorship Program).

 CPI’s Lead Team also presented six self-advocacy awards to their peers: the Good Humor Award to Scott Hanson, the Helping Hand Award to Reny Remillard, the Self-Advocacy Award to Matt Winters, the Community Member Award to Charlene Longmore, the Friendship Award to Nicia Washington, and the Healthy Living Award to Robert Daney.

 A 501(c) 3 non-profit, CPI has been providing direct support services to individuals with developmental disabilities since 1967. Programs include independent living, employment support, community inclusion services, and senior enrichment. Individuals are supported residentially with a variety of housing options, ranging from supported independent living to licensed facilities in communities throughout York, Cumberland, Androscoggin and Kennebec Counties.
